To: Robin and Eileen Garvie
Dear Robin and Eileen, Yours in our Lord Jesus, Gordon.
From: Robin and Eileen Garvie
Dear Brother Gordon, May the Lord Jesus bless you in your work for Him.
Your brethren in His love, Robin and Eileen.
Dear Brother Gordon, Well, Robin is nephew to Archie Garvie (with Christ, 1983) whom you may remember as he was often over to meetings. Eileen is daughter of Phillip Hellberg (with Christ, 1969).
We are very interested in your correspondence with Max Weremchuk. We translated his book into Spanish,
We have in Spanish “Handing on the Torch”, a selection of FER’s ministry (published by Stone Publishing Trust).
We have been thinking lately of that word you mention as to Recovery and Maintenance of the Truth (AJG). We feel it is sectarian and selfish pride to use it.
We are 100% with what you say as to the very sad history of the brethren – lovely beginning but disaster at the end!
The work began here in 1890 by Italians who met JND in Milan. But the cruel separation as to divided households in the 1960’s was the beginning of hardness and cruelty.
After leaving, being so isolated and alone, we felt the need of Christian fellowship and fell again and were deceived once more by the Watchman Nee-Witness Lee group.
We long to share true fellowship (with fear of the word!) with any one you may know faithful to Jesus Name.
I used to write to Noel Brien when we were young and he still lived in Ireland. If you can, please convey my love to him and assure him I still love him and pray for him …
We will pray for your work in bringing unity and love for the Lord and one another.
Just another thing – we have recently done a new Hymn Book in Spanish with a selection of hymns from the one we used in the Jims and also of other Hymn Books, especially Gospel Hymns which we missed!
Well, will close. Looking forward to some news from you when you can.
Your brethren in His love, we salute you with Nahum 1:7!
"Jehovah is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him."
Robin and Eileen.
To: Robin and Eileen Garvie
Dear Robin and Eileen,
Thanks for your invitation to BA. It would be a joy to see you and
those the Lord has given to meet with. Please greet them for us.
We feel with you in being so deceived in 1970, and in the
disappointments after we left in attempting to find true fellowship,
having made several blunders ourselves.
The correspondence with Max Weremchuk was interesting but has abruptly
ceased as the result of attacks on 'My Brethren' by some of the
KLC/Reunited group. See
I certainly agree that there were faithful persons in each generation
– the overcomers – and that much, though not all, is today connected with individual responsibility.
As to the history in Argentina, I have an account – with which you may be familiar – dated 1954 and 1960 by Axel Kyster.
I hope you will continue to explore MB and to watch for additions and, of course, continue to pray for me.
Affectionately in our Lord Jesus, Gordon.
From: Robin and Eileen Garvie
Dear Gordon, Thursday, March 29, 2001: As to the History written by Axel Kyster we don't remember ever reading it, but would be interested in seeing it.
You ask about the expression "Recovery & Maintenance of the Truth". We want to be simple about it.
In 'Notes of Ministry', March 2001, edited by J.Strachan of Scotland we read 'the fathers handed on to us',
When we were in England in 1997 it was sad to see the brethren so divided, each little group following a different leader.
Please have patience with us, as we are so isolated here and sometimes get wrong impressions! Also often what is written doesn't really express the feelings!
As to the hymns, we felt the same when making our new hymnbook in Spanish.
We have to be on our guard today to stand against the attack that began with Kelly and Lowe, and still continues in bitterness, biting and devouring the brethren,
We want to say again, if anyone you know would like to come and visit us they will be very welcome. The few brethren in Rosario and Acebal need a lot of comfort and help.
If you have some new hymns to be used in the service of God please send us some.
May He bless you and continue to use you in His service. With much love in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, our soon returning Lord to you and your wife!
Yours in His love, Robin and Eileen.
P.S. There are many vacancies for gospel preachers for the open air!
To: Robin and Eileen Garvie
Dear Robin & Eileen,
I rejoice with you in what you have found of "the work of God ...
and the liberty of the Spirit" in brethren in other parts of South America.
The "many divisions, each claiming to keep the 'golden line'" are
humbling indeed but do not negate the great truths which have come out
in earlier ministry.
I'm not familiar with J. Strachan or the context of his remarks. I
thought I had Geoffrey Bacon's book some years ago but can't put my hand
on it. I have only heard of Kenneth Rosdahl in passing.
Your situation of relative isolation is quite understood and I do feel
with you. The interchange with others is very important to our understanding.
Your appreciation of JT's ministry as to the service of God is shared.
While there are many needs and services manward – and I seek to do what I can
Yes, I am well aware of the the attacks of certain brethren on various
truths and servants.
Thanks for the renewed invitation. Perhaps some other guests will
notice and contact you.
Regarding hymns: I have a Hymn Concordance search program (in DOS, and
written by another brother several years ago).
Affectionately in our Lord Jesus, Gordon.
From: Robin and Eilen Garvie
Dear Brother Gordon,
There are many in this country that are dead towards the Lord and His testimony, produced by the System over the years.
As to what Axel Kyster wrote, there are parts which are interesting, without so much personal information! Of course, things have changed quite a bit now, as the meetings in Cordoba, Tafi Viejo and Montevideo have closed down. Also in BA and Rosario all the brethren moved to a suburb near the international airport and live close to one another.
… How the Lord Jesus must feel it, seeing those who really love Him and want to be faithful to Him so ready to have nothing to do with one another,
We love you and value what you do, we all say Good-bye with 1 Corinthians 6: 11.
Yours in His love, Robin and Eileen
To: Robin and Eileen Garvie
Dear Robin and Eileen, There is no doubt that because some "thought we were the only processors of the truth",
… Like yourselves I desire only to walk pleasing to our Lord and in accord with the Scriptures and the opening up of the truth which I believe we all value …
I sympathize with the needs of the many in your country who have and are
suffering from the legal system and trust that you will be at the Lord's
disposal to help them.
You are in our prayers.
Affectionately in our Lord Jesus, Gordon.

Dear Robin and Eileen, Affectionately in our Lord Jesus, Gordon and Betty.

Dear Gordon and Betty, Dear Brethren, Thank you for your love and prayers.
Our Father in heaven knows what we need, but its a test to go on day by day, with little work and less pay for what you do.
May our Lord Jesus bless you and help you in the coming year, until He come! Yours in His love, Robin and Eileen.

Dear Gordon and Betty, Thanks for the e-mail regarding Mr. J. S. Ephgrave's ministry. I am on vacation in Ireland and in the UK and I took with me the book you have mentioned and the one he has on The Blood. I have enjoyed reading these books and I am hoping to read these books again, if I can get the chance to do so.
I trust that you and Betty are keeping well through mercy. If you are in contact with Walter please let him know that I staying with Eliza his sister and I have been to see Margaret. Eliza is fine and in spite of Margaret's condition she was very bright in spirit.
I will get in touch with you when I get back to the USA the first week of October. You could always contact me through e-mail until I get back.
Much love to you both in our Lord Jesus, Ralph V. Gentles.

This message appeared on another site:I am an ex EB from 1960 and have travelled around the world primarily to run from my experiences as young person who could not and did not want to cope with the controls of the Exclusive Brethren. I was in the EB's in the Cardiff and Whitchurch areas of South Wales (UK) and I am trying to fill in some gaps in my life there. This will no doubt take time but I would like to know if anyone on this web site is able and willing to contact me and see if they can help. I am balanced in my views and want to assess my early years with some objectivity so if anyone can help please e mail me.Many thanks, Peter Gerald. |

Thu, 7 Dec 2000
Dear Gordon,
Thank you for responding to my entry in the Guestbook. I am trying to piece together any objective information on some of the attitudes and rules and other issues which the Exclusive Brethren were guided by in the period around 1950's and 1960's.
I went through a rather unique experience – well so I am told. In the late 1940's I was taken into care by Social Services in the South Wales area (at that time Glamorgan County Council).
Since my experiences as a young person, some of which were horrendous, I have managed to my life along a relatively safe and straight path
So as that now 60 year old (young 60) I am trying to fill some gaps, as stated objectively in my past.
There is a potted history and I would be pleased to contact through emails and take up your kind offer,
Many thanks for kind comments. Move in peace and always remember love and care are not commodities which are to be invoiced.
Peter Gerald.

Dear Peter,
Thank you for sharing your "rather unique experience" – which it surely is.
It might take a book to provide "objective information on some of the attitudes and rules and other issues", and it is difficult to know where or how to begin.
You don't indicate whether you consider yourself to be a Christian and, if so, in what sense.
If you visit the 'My Brethren' web site and check the Special Message on the 'Home Page' and the Personal group you will get a feel for where I am coming from.
I'll look forward to hearing from you. Yours in the Lord, Gordon.

Dear Gordon,
Thank you for your response to my enquiry. I am familiar with your web page and I find it particularly helpful and fruitful.
I move with the winds and clouds of freedom from any particular belief system (as I refer to them) which have been made by man primarily to satisfy man's needs.
To the work I am doing – I was placed in care in the late 1940's in the UK (Cardiff South Wales) having been taken away from my parents who were jailed for cruelty, common after the 2nd World War.
I am attempting to objectively assess some of the power structures and rules the EB's held in that period and what they hold today. I am also assessing the following:
As you can see my questions range and if you feel you cannot, unable to or simply do not want to answer objectively, I will fully understand and I thank you for responding in the first place.
Thank you and walk in care, Peter Gerald.

Dear Gordon,
As an immediate follow up. From my experience from my initial days and in the present time the Exclusive Brethren seem to want to make use of 2 rather harsh words.

From: Tim Grass
Dear Gordon, [See my reply below for the questions.]
Sorry to trouble you, and many thanks in advance for your help.
Tim Grass.
To: Tim Grass
Dear Tim, 1. Are any of the successive groups of 'out' Brethren in fellowship with each other? – Not at all likely.
2. Are any steps being taken to seek reconciliation between any two or more such groups? (like those which led to the K-L-G reconciliation some years back) – Unknown – this would be very unlikely.
3. How do such meetings maintain contact with one another? – If you mean group contacts I doubt there are any. Other contacts would be through earlier personal or family connections.
4. Would it be fair to say that each group accepts all the doctrine of the Taylorites up to the point at which it left? I get the impression that some would question some of what had been taught before they left, as well as what was taught after they left.
– Not sure, but all would refuse points on which they left and most likely some earlier points – definitely would refuse subsequent teaching.
5. What now differentiates these groups from one another doctrinally? – Hard to say, most likely as in #4 plus administrative points.
6. How similar are they in their practice –' in meetings, baptism, breaking of bread etc.? – Probably very similar if not identical.
7. We have an 'out' meeting near here which has contact with local OBs. How typical would that be? – It would be atypical.
8. Also, at least some 'outs' ended up among OBs; I know of some at any rate. Now, what I'm wondering is what they took with them, and how that might have affected the OBs.
– I doubt that any who joined the 'open' meetings would have had much effect and would more likely have been themselves affected by the "open' outlook, ecclesiatically and doctrinally.
It would be more accurate to speak of an 'in' phenomenon, that so many would remain in what had become a legal sect in 1959 and continues as such to this day.
As far as I know the term 'out' was only use to refer to those who withdrew in 1959 or ealy 1960's and has not been used by, or of, those who left in 1970 over Aberdeen.
The reaction to your project by some would likely be based on remarks of FER as to Neatby's history.
You find might pages 131-46 of the KBT book 'A Further Review of Recovery to the Truth and Its Maintenance (1827-1997)' of interest in connection with some of your questions. The book was written by Brian W. Burton, a KBT trustee.
I hope this is of some help.

Thanks for your e-mail. I will be visiting again, I'm sure, as I've been
asked by a publisher to write a history of the Brethren movement in the UK.
I'm now getting into the thick of the necessary research.

Thanks for your interesting reply. It sounds like you are kept busy. I
hope MB will be of some help in your project. If you use anything major
a source credit somewhere would be appreciated.

Thanks for your new email address. I share your distaste for spam but, sadly, it seems unavoidable.

I'm wondering if you can help me … Well – quite a list of questions.

I'll answer your questions to the best of my limited knowledge but am not sure what value it will be to you.

The following message appeared on another site:I have recently discovered Brethren Teaching. This has been like finding buried treasure. I would rather have this than any amount of money. Darby, Mackintosh, Kelly, Stoney, Bellett and others have taught me so much.In Christ, Mark A. Gray. |

Dear Mark,
I saw your message on Steve Hesterman's site. You will find some more
"treasure" on the 'My Brethren' site. I hope you will pay a visit.
In our Lord Jesus, Gordon.

Gordon,
Thanks for helping me find more treasure. I wish I would have found this when I was a youth. Being in my 40's, still gives me time to grow!
In Christ's Service, Mark A. Gray.

Dear Mark,
Glad to be of help. Could you let me know your locality for the Mailbox record? Also, don't hesitate to share your background and exercises in the Mailbox with other guests of MB.
In the Lord Jesus, Gordon.

Dear Joanna, You are the first guest from Ireland! Please come back again and let any brethren who are free know about My Brethren.
Yours in the Lord, Gordon Rainbow.
To: Joanna Greeves
Dear Joanna,
I sent the following to Dick Wyman re an entry on his site from a Mark Pons who is still 'in':
"Hi Dick, There is a mention of a Pons family in the April 1999 entry of Joanna Greeves in the MB Guest Book No. 1. Might be worth checking".
Yours in the Lord, Gordon.
From: Joanna Greeves
Dear Gordon,
With love in Him, Joanna.
To: Rodney Griffin
Dear Rodney, I have checked your genealogy page and congratulate you on a very thorough job.
You say "My wife and children continue to serve and love our Lord but in the context of a non denominational community church". I'd be interested to learn whether this means that you are also in the same connection.
Rodney, you can certainly be thankful for a rich spiritual heritage going back several generations.
In our Lord Jesus, Gordon.
From: Rodney Griffin
Please note our new email if anyone would like to correspond. [Change is reflected above. -Ed.]
With kind regards, Rodney Griffin.

I am not part of your Plymouth Brethren group. I am a 26 year old female from Canada.
My step dad has been a part of my life since I was 5. I call him Dad, I introduce him as Dad to people I know. He is the only father I have and has raised me as his daughter.
I am told that your followers are not allowed to sit down and have a meal with those who are not brethren. Why is this?
I thank you for your time, patience, and understanding.
Lana.

Thank you very much for your email. Mark Pons is my cousin whom I have
never met as he was born after 1970. As far as we know he can only be
about 18 and will need our prayers especially because of his age in his
situation.Rodney Griffin

Welcome to 'My brethren' and many thanks for sharing your family connection with Arthur G. Brown. I had some correspondence with him in 1973 and appreciated both the personal contact and the historical information he furnished.

Thanks you for writing. You are courageous and wise to seek for an explanation of the family situation you describe.
