This bibliography lists all the books, booklets, pamphlets and other documents in my library which relate to
the general public history of the church, to notable individuals and, in particular, to the history of what is commonly called the "brethren" movement.
Many of the books are written from a preconceived and prejudiced position and are, therefore, biased in favour of the author's viewpoint – and so should be read with care.
- Even when facts may be reported reasonably accurately the interpretation may be suspect.
A historian's chief responsibility is to present thoroughly
researched and authenticated facts, objectively and free from personal
bias.
- On this rests his right to public recognition as a scholar, as well
as his personal integrity.
- Only when these conditions have been fulfilled has he the liberty to draw moral or spiritual lessons from the past.
History, political and religious, has been written largely by the
victorious side in any conflict. It therefore reflects
- the peculiar prejudices of the victors, portraying themselves as virtuous and their enemies as evil, despicable and, often, as guilty of heinous crimes whereas the opposite may actually be true.
- More often than not, the records of the vanquished or persecuted have been lost, destroyed by the victors, or only survive secretly – treasured by a remnant.
The books have been classified as:
Histories:
- The Public History Of The Church
- The "Brethren" Movement
Biographies:
- General
- "Brethren"
Some items were privately produced and not published. Many items are out of print.
The symbol ¶ indicates items relating in whole, or in part, to the "brethren" movement.
