Heavenly Glory
1 Corinthians 15: 40-50

Lord Jesus, Thou art living,
The Firstborn from the dead,
Firstfruits of God's great harvest,
Thou glorious living Head!
The second Man, from heaven,
Head of a heav'nly race,
The heav'nly One – God's glory
Is shining in Thy face!

The God of resurrection
Has raised Thee from the dead,
Has giv'n Thee pow'r and glory,
And made Thee Lord, and Head.
Thou camest out of heaven –
Last Adam, Second Man,
Didst come, God's will fulfilling,
According to His plan.

Now unto God – to glory
Thou'rt bringing many sons,
As Thou art – glorious triumph!
Such are the heav'nly ones.
O wondrous realm of glory –
The sun, the moon as well,
Each star distinct in glory –
All doth God's glory tell!

Practical Christianity

Let us be swift to hear, and slow to speak,
The wisdom from above, come, let us seek;
We must receivers be ere we can give –
Of God's own will begat, thus made to live!

So we must learn to read ere we can write,
Take in what God would say, to speak aright,
With meekness to accept th'implanted word,
And to express in grace what we have heard.

Thus James is teaching us what we should be,
And he would say again, Listen to me! [Acts 15: 13]
Faith without works is dead, all is in vain –
Take heed to what he says – read it again!

And if we know these things (our Lord did say),
We're blessed in doing them, this is love's way.
'Tis pure religion here that James would teach,
Urging the practice here of what we preach!

And as we read his words, how small we feel,
But hearts and conscience stirred by love's appeal,
Behind the stern rebuke true love we find,
For it is fruit for God that is in mind.

And, as we turn to Him, God gives more grace,
And we, divinely taught, find our true place,
Sustained in patience, wait the coming day
When all that God has wrought He will display.

Grace Reigns
Romans 5: 21 – Leviticus 25: 9-10 – Ephesians 4: 32

Grace reigns through righteousness, O wondrous thought –
'Tis by the blood of Jesus we are bought!
Unto eternal life this grace is giv'n,
Through Jesus Christ our Lord, enthroned in heav'n.

May we each hear the glad and joyful sound,
In the release of Jubilee be found,
The trumpet sounds on the atonement day –
In all our hearts may grace divine hold sway!

O let us keep in mind that grace doth reign,
That t'wards each other here grace may obtain,
As God has been to us so let us be
To one another – dwell in unity!

And grace restores, how blessèd this to know,
The grace of God to one another show,
Bring erring ones back to their place again,
And thus to prove, in love, that grace doth reign.

So let us be to one another kind,
Forgive, forbear, in lowliness of mind,
May grace be seen in all we say and do –
Rememb'ring, God in Christ forgiveth you!

Morning Prayer and Evening Peace
Psalm 5: 8 – Psalm 4: 8

Morning Prayer

Keep me, O Lord, throughout this day;
My soul looks up to Thee,
For grace to walk the narrow way,
Faithful and true to be.

Thou canst subdue the stubborn will,
The faltering footsteps guide,
Thy word the troubled heart can still
However sorely tried.

Thou hast been here, to Thee well-known
The trials here below –
Thou now, as Priest upon the throne,
Dost suited grace bestow!

So lead me on in righteousness,
Make plain my way, O Lord,
To grow in grace, and holiness,
And joy to Thee afford.

Soon th'eternal day will break,
Day never to decline,
The dawn of which my soul would wake –
The Morning Star doth shine!

Evening Peace

Peace now, Lord, at eventide,
Brought through another day,
Kept, by the grace Thou hast supplied,
Still in the upward way.

I lay me down in peace to sleep,
Thou my salvation art,
And faithful Shepherd, Thou dost keep –
Put joy into my heart.

The light of Thy blest countenance
Has shone on me this day,
Thou dost control each circumstance,
And guide me in the way.

How good to trust Thee, and to know
Thy love – in Thee confide,
Each night and day whilst here below,
Whatever may betide!

And soon the nights will all be o'er,
The day be fully come,
And no more night – for evermore
With Thee in that bright home!

Satisfied with Favour
Deuteronomy 33: 23 – Psalm 36: 8 – Philippians 4: 11

Abundant satisfaction
O God, with what Thou art,
Wealth of Thy house – its fatness –
Is now our wondrous part;
The river of Thy pleasures
Sustains our souls today –
Our hearts are filled with wonder
As brought beneath Thy sway!

Thy full delight in Jesus
Thou givest us to know,
From Him now, by the Spirit,
What living waters flow!
Now satisfied with favour,
As those whom Thou dost bless,
The goodly land providing,
Thou would'st that we possess.

Whate'er our circumstances,
Our souls are satisfied,
From all the wealth of heaven,
Our every need supplied.
Joyful, though here in suff'ring,
We wait that glorious day
When, waking in His likeness,
We're satisfied for aye!

Thy Thoughts Toward Us
Psalm 40: 5 – Psalm 139: 17

God of glory, great Thy purpose,
Great Thy wondrous thoughts of love,
Which in Christ have been unfolded,
Far all human thoughts above;
All according to Thy counsels,
Held before the world began,
Finding their blest consummation
Now in Christ, the Son of man.

Thou hast in Thy grace, our Father,
In our hearts the Earnest giv'n,
That we might have present entrance
To the wondrous things of heav'n;
That we might, e'en now, be able
With all saints to apprehend
Christ's great love, surpassing knowledge –
Far to great to comprehend!

Wonderful indeed Thy glory,
Shining now in Jesu's face,
All Thy thoughts of love unfolding,
All the secrets of Thy grace!
In Him all Thy heart's deep longings
For Thy creature man revealed –
Now in Christ we are before Thee,
By the Holy Spirit sealed.

Sealed, anointed, giv'n the Earnest,
Wondrous favour all divine!
Now, in Christ, and by the Spirit,
Truly, wholly, fully Thine.
Filled with joy we come before Thee,
Now in sonship liberty –
Unto Thee, our God, forever
Glory, glory, glory be!

Valleys
Psalm 23: 4 – Psalm 84: 6
Hosea 2: 15 – Genesis 14: 17 – Isaiah 63: 14

Through the valley, Saviour, lead me,
Giving me Thy peace to know,
Even where we see death's shadow,
Lord, Thy comforts ever flow.

As we pass through Baca's valley,
Thou dost wipe the tears away;
Here we find the Wellspring flowing,
Blessings fresh from heav'n each day.

Thou dost make e'en Achor's valley
For a door of hope to be,
Fruitful vineyards there appearing,
There fresh songs arise to Thee.

Let us not despise the valley,
Humbly there may we retreat,
Kept in lowliness of spirit –
For the Masters' service meet!

See Abraham, still in the valley,
After his great victory,
And therein he's freshly proving
Heav'n's support and ministry.

Such a one as king of Sodom,
Could not enrich the heav'nly man,
But Melchizedek's great service
Richly proves that heaven can!

Lead us, Lord, still in the valley,
In Thy grace and lowliness,
That, in patience and in meekness,
We may each our souls possess.

Sweet the produce of the valley,
Eshcol's grapes were gathered there,
Thro' the springs from heav'n provided,
And these precious fruits we share!

Saved by Grace

Now by the virtue of the blood
Which cleansed and brought us nigh to God,
We know our place on high.
Our God, we bless Thee for Thy grace,
Which sets us thus before Thy face
In sonship liberty.

Vessels of mercy now are we,
Vessels of glory soon to be,
All saved by sovereign grave –
Our hearts are filled with peace and joy,
And grateful praise our lips employ,
Happy indeed our case!

How great the value of the blood,
How wonderful the love of God
Which fills our hearts today!
And soon, with all the saints above,
We'll prove the wonders of that love,
And see its full display!

From Death to Life

The outward man is breaking down,
The body weaker grows,
With scarcely strength to carry on,
But this the Saviour knows;
He knows our frame, we are but dust,
Yet, by His power, doth give
Renewal to the inner man,
So, whilst we die, we live.

It is through death we really live,
This may we early know,
Not wait till our last days down here,
But early start to grow
In resurrection life, beyond
The scenes of death around –
As dead and risen with the Christ,
Reach resurrection ground!

O wondrous mystery of God,
That whilst we die, we live!
To die is gain, O wondrous word –
May we this word receive!
And, by the Spirit's power to face
The end of all things here,
Having our part in things above,
Our life, our home, is there.

O wondrous sphere of life, to live
E'en now in realms above,
We know we've passed from death to life,
For we the brethren love.
Christ is our life, this would we prove,
And have our minds today
Upon the things which are above,
Which will not pass away.

The Love of Christ
John 13: 23-25 – John 21: 20-22

John lay in His bosom, and leaned on His breast –
O wonderful place of affection and rest!
Abiding in Him, in such nearness to dwell,
What wonderful secrets the Master would tell!

The love of the Father would fully disclose,
And Judas the traitor His love must expose.
True light, and love's fulness the Lord would impart,
As touching the conscience, yet winning the heart.

For disciples He loves, and richly has blessed,
There's a place in His bosom, and rest on His breast.
'Twas this wondrous love which John's own heart did fill,
Though Peter may question, John's following still!

And this will abide until Jesus shall come,
The spirit that follows Him right to His home!
O glorious Saviour, great Lover, may we
Each one know the joy of abiding in Thee!

As He is Pure
1 John 3: 3

We shall see Him and be like Him,
We shall see Him as He is,
See Him there in all His glory –
This will be the crowning bliss!

See the King in all His beauty,
In that land of pure delight,
What a recompense for suff'ring,
Faith long proved gives place to sight!

We shall see Him – joyful prospect –
Hope that purifies our hearts,
And His love, our present portion,
Daily holiness imparts.

May we, in this hope rejoicing,
Ever tread the heav'nward way,
Keep, in holy separation,
His commandments ev'ry day!

Fulfilment
Romans 8: 1-3

The Spirit of life in Christ Jesus –
O wonderful pow'r known within,
Imparted by Christ now exalted,
Sets free from the power of sin!

How wondrous was God's intervention
In sending His Son here to die,
Sin's judgment was borne in His body,
And now He's exalted on high!

In Christ Jesus – no condemnation –
In Him, O how blessèd to be
Enjoying God's wondrous salvation,
From sin's law I have been set free!

And walking, empowered from heaven,
By law of the Spirit of life,
Not after the flesh, but the Spirit –
My path now with blessing is rife.

Set free from the power of Satan,
From the law of sin and of death,
For Christ to His own has imparted
The Spirit, the life-giving Breath!

And thus is God's righteous requirement
Expressed in the law which was giv'n,
Fulfilled in the walk of His people,
By the Spirit come down from heav'n!

The Perfect Servant
Mark 7: 37 – Mark 16: 20

Lord Jesus, Thou dost all things well,
Our wond'ring hearts exclaim,
As we come into touch with Thee,
And find Thee still the same.

Thou hast been here upon this earth –
What wonders Thou didst do,
Thy touch of power could healing give,
The devil's works undo!

Deaf made to hear, the dumb to speak,
The blind were made to see,
Thy word brought forth the dead again,
Did Satan's captives free.

Blest Son of God, unique art Thou
In all Thy power and grace,
Thou who didst come from heav'n above
To save a ruined race.

In Thy devotion, Thou didst die
On the accursèd tree –
Through this great service, Lord, of Thine,
Creation will be free!

O glorious Saviour, Thou art still
The same in grace and pow'r.
May we each know Thy touch today,
The glory of this hour!

Yes, Lord, Thou doest all things well,
We fain would like Thee be,
Keep us 'neath Thy blest influence, Lord,
That we may follow Thee.

The perfect Servant, now from heav'n
Still doing all things well –
We too would serve, Lord be with us
As we of Thee would tell!

Grant us Thy meekness, Lord, to know,
Thy lowliness and grace,
Serve, as directed, Lord, by Thee
In our appointed place.

A Doxology

Praise God who giveth to us breath,
Praise God who saves from sin and death,
Praise Him who gave His only Son
That Satan's works might be undone.

Praise God who raises from the dead,
Praise God for Christ, our living Head,
Who died, and shed His precious blood,
Atonement made and peace with God.

Praise God we live, because Christ died,
The blood and water did provide.
We also live because He lives,
Eternal life to us He gives!

Praise God, too, for the Spirit giv'n,
The witness here of Christ in heav'n –
In concert with the ransomed host,
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost!

The Message – A Word for Preachers
1 Samuel 25: 9

It was David's word to Nabal
That his young men simply told,
No words of their own they added,
Just his message – clear and bold!

What a lesson for the preacher –
Get your message from the Lord,
With your own thoughts do not colour
What should simply be His word.

Then 'twill be a word of power
For the conscience and the heart,
Sent by God to win the sinner,
Blessing to him to impart.

Men will find in Christ a Saviour –
Place of blessing at His feet,
Guilty sinners, if repenting,
There a Saviour God will meet!

This is why He sends the preacher,
Poor lost sinners He would bless,
Cleanse, forgive, and heal, and comfort,
Clothe them with His righteousness.

So ring out the glorious message,
Preach the word again, again,
Tell of Christ, of God's glad tidings –
Joyful news for sinful man!

God's glad tidings of salvation
Sounding from the throne above,
Sent from heaven by the Spirit,
Telling sinners God is love.

Preach the word of God, O preacher!
Let no human thoughts obtain –
'Tis the day of God's salvation,
Grace, through righteousness, doth reign!

God is Light
1 John 1: 5

Our God is light, no darkness e'er will dim
The glory of the light which shines in Him,
Its radiancy will shed its beams benign,
Filling creation soon with joy divine.

A Sun and Shield – how blessèd God to know!
For sovereign grace and goodness from Him flow,
Revealed in Christ the fulness of His love,
Who came to make it known, from courts above.

How happy we in this light now to be,
To know the love which gives us liberty,
And casts out ev'ry fear – we now may dwell
With God Himself – O love unsearchable!

The portion of the saints in light to know,
Walk in the light in fellowship below,
Children of light, belonging to that place,
Yes, sons of light now, by God's wondrous grace.

The true light shines, darkness will pass away,
And op'ning out before us cloudless day,
With all the saints in that bright home above,
We'll praise the God who is both light and love!

A Way of More Surpassing Excellence
1 Corinthians 12: 31 – Galatians 6: 2 – 1 Peter 1: 21-24

Bear ye one another's burdens,
And the law of Christ fulfil –
What a word for true believers
Who desire to do His will!
Jesus was the great example
Of this wondrous way of God,
Bearing all our griefs and sorrows,
In the path of grace He trod.

See Him smitten and afflicted,
As in love our sins He bore –
For our sins and our transgressions
He Himself was wounded sore!
We are healed, but He was wounded,
And we live because He died –
Let "this mind" our lives now govern,
By His grace from heav'n supplied!

Bear ye one another's burdens –
May we take this word to heart,
By the grace supplied by Jesus,
Help and comfort to impart!
Make the grievous burdens lighter,
Share, in love, the heavy load,
Make the heav'nly prospect brighter,
Tread together heaven's road!

Wondrous law revealed from heaven,
Law of life, and law of love,
In perfection seen in Jesus –
"Oil and wine" from heav'n above!
Healing wounded, lifting fallen,
Law of Christ fulfilled today,
Excellence, all else surpassing,
Love's supreme and royal way!

The Gain of Affliction
Psalm 119: 67,71,75

When things seem overwhelming,
In circumstances sore,
O God, in deepest trials
We prove Thee yet the more;
The pressure all is measured
By Thy wise loving hand,
And all circumstances
Are under Thy command!

And faith, our God, to trust Thee,
Thou givest ev'ry day,
Thou givest all that's needed,
Yes, all along the way;
And thus we learn to know Thee
Here in affliction's ways –
The deepest, sorest, trial
Will yield the sweetest praise!

How good, our God, to know Thee
As our resource below,
Thy perfect love and wisdom,
In pressure giv'n to know.
Thou givest to us patience,
And comfort in distress,
So that, as overcomers,
In song Thy name we bless!

And soon above, in glory,
Earth's pathway we'll retrace,
And praise the perfect wisdom
Of all Thy ways in grace.
All who've been formed through suff'ring
Will there in glory shine,
Conformed to Christ's own image –
Climax of ways divine!

In the Morning
John 21: 1-14

On the shore behold 'tis Jesus,
See Him, patient, waiting there –
We have nothing – He has plenty
Which, in grace, with us He'd share!

Toiled all night and taken nothing,
Slow t'accept His faithful word,
That we cannot do without Him,
Yet His grace is undeterred.

Good to see the morning breaking,
After such a weary night,
And to see the Saviour standing –
He Himself the morning light.
[See 2 Samuel 23: 4. C.D.]

Day is breaking – we behold Him
On the resurrection shore –
Living food of His providing
He supplies from heaven's store!

What an object-lesson for us,
Without Jesus all is vain,
But with Him, in resurrection,
Present and eternal gain!

Son of God, how great Thy glory
Manifested to Thine own –
From Thy fulness each receiving,
Grace on grace so freely shown!

Shepherd Care
Psalm 23

Since Thou, Lord, art my Shepherd,
No want my heart doth know,
I lie down in green pastures
Where peaceful waters flow.
Thy touch myself restoring,
In paths of righteousness
Thou leadest me, blest Saviour –
Thy name my soul would bless!

And though I walk the valley
Where death its shadows cast,
Thy mighty hand is o'er me
Till shadows all are past.
So I will fear no evil
For Thou, Lord, art with me,
Thy staff, Thy rod, my comfort,
Sustained each step by Thee!

A table Thou preparest,
Though enemies abound –
O Lord, from Thy blest fulness
Is satisfaction found!
My head with oil anointing,
My cup is full – runs o'er!
Goodness and mercy follow
Till home on heaven's shore.

A Great Calm

O Lord, in Thee our souls do find
Sweet comfort, joy and peace,
Thy word doth calm the troubled mind,
Bids doubts and fears to cease.

And when fresh trials here assail,
Our eyes look up to Thee,
Then hades' gates shall not prevail –
Another victory!

Thy word the raging storm doth still,
And brings a peaceful calm.
All must obey Thy sovereign will –
The groan turns to a psalm!

Songs of deliverance still surround
Thy people here below,
Thy pow'r encircles us around,
More songs of vict'ry flow!

And thus 'twill be unto the end
Of all our journey here,
Mighty Deliv'rer, Shepherd, Friend,
Till we in heav'n appear.

The Price – The Prize!
2 Corinthians 5: 21 – Ephesians 5: 25-27 – John 17: 1

We think of Thee in all Thy suff'rings here,
So perfect, Thou, in all that Thou didst bear!
"Thy will, not mine, be done", Lord, Thou hadst said,
Thus Thou didst die – wast numbered with the dead!

We think of Thee, of Thy deep agony,
The depths of anguish in Gethsemane,
The cross endured, forsaken of Thy God –
Climax of Thy devoted pathway trod!

We ponder thus, affections deeply stirred –
Most wondrous story that our ears have heard,
Love and devotedness beyond compare,
Alone in suff'rings none with Thee could share!

But Thou art ris'n, we share Thy triumphs now,
As at Thy feet adoringly we bow,
With joy we hail Thee, Firstborn from the dead,
Of all creation, glorious living Head!

No longer now alone, Thou hast Thy bride,
The longings of Thy heart are satisfied –
Blest answer to Thy toil and suff'rings here,
When she with Thee in glory shall appear!

The Father, too, has glorified His Son
For, through Thy death, He has fresh glory won,
The many sons, Thy brethren, to Him brought,
The worshippers the Father long had sought!

Fruit of Thy death, it is our joy today
To praise Thy name, to own Thy rightful sway –
We worship now, our hearts completely won,
Rejoicing in the Father and the Son!

The Divine Promise<
"I am coming to you", John 14: 18/A>

Thoughts before the Supper

Arise, O Lord, and come into Thy rest,
As Thy saints now assemble to Thee here.
Present Thyself again, the living One,
Coming to us again, our hearts to cheer.
We'd prove afresh Thy precious promise, Lord,
As Thou dost keep, in faithful love, Thy word.

O may Thy priests be clothed with righteousness,
And move Thy saints each one to shout for joy,
Thy presence fill our hearts with fresh delight,
Thy praises sweet our willing lips employ –
Most precious hour on earth, Lord, to our heart,
When Thou dost come and heav'nly joy impart!

After the Supper

We bless Thee, Lord, for proving once again
The wonder of Thy coming to us here,
To have Thee with us, yea, Thyself, O Lord,
To see Thee, and Thy living voice to hear,
Coming to us again in wondrous grace,
And giving us once more to see Thy face.

And with salvation Thou dost clothe Thy priests,
And cause Thy saints to shout aloud for joy,
Our eyes on Thee with holy joy to rest,
And praises led by Thee our lips employ,
Praises to God, and to the Father giv'n,
As Thou dost bring us even now to heav'n!

O wondrous wisdom, thoughtfulness, and love,
When Thou the supper didst for us provide –
Whilst we await Thy coming for us, Lord,
Thou comest to us – thus we are supplied
By Thee with pow'r to tread the heav'nly road
Which leads us up to our prepared abode.

A Praise Song

O God, so great and glorious,
Thyself we contemplate,
The Father, Son, and Spirit –
Blest Trinity – how great!

Thyself in grace expressing,
In love's economy,
Engaged in wondrous blessing,
Fully revealed we see.

Blest Father, source of glory,
Made known in Christ, the Son,
The Spirit bearing witness
To all that Thou hast done.

O God, we bow before Thee,
And grateful tribute raise,
With joy our hearts adore Thee,
With rev'rent lips we praise.

It is as sons we know Thee,
In new creation now,
Made conscious of this nearness,
Our hearts in worship bow.

Love – the Power for Service

The essence of true service,
Love is the power that wins –
Love covers by its virtue
A multitude of sins!
Love is the very nature,
The very life of God –
In our hearts, by the Spirit,
This love is shed abroad!

E'en if an able speaker,
And filled with knowledge great,
I have not love, I'm nothing –
Bankrupt is my estate!
Love suffers long, is patient,
Endures all things, is kind,
And to the faults of others
Is somewhat deaf and blind.

The love of God, in Jesus,
Shines now on all His own,
Effective grace for service
Is flowing from the throne.
May it control the Levites
In service here today,
Making their work effective,
Give power to what they say.

"I love" – the Hebrew bondman
Spoke plainly, faithful He –
"My Master, wife, and children,
I will not go out free!"
"I come" – O perfect Servant! –
"To do Thy will, O God!"
In love, through death, providing
The water and the blood.

"I gave" – the dying Saviour
In love's amazing grace,
Endured in patient suff'ring,
The smiting of His face.
'Tis by this heav'nly spirit
The testimony thrives,
The love which finds expression
In laying down our lives.

With ev'ry other feature,
May we true love express,
It is the crowning glory,
The bond of perfectness.
Love will abide for ever,
When earthly things are gone,
And be displayed in glory
In all that it has done.

The Kingdom and the Assembly
Psalm 145 – Ephesians 1: 22-23

The glory of Thy kingdom,
O God, we would declare,
As those who have been given
Its wondrous grace to share.
How glorious are its features –
Righteousness, peace, and joy!
How happy are its subjects –
Thy praise their lips employ!

And of its glorious greatness
Thy saints delight to tell,
The wonders of Mount Zion,
Thy chosen place to dwell –
Thy sovereign mercy showing
Thy healing power and grace,
Thy righteousness and glory,
The shining of Thy face.

Glad tidings of the kingdom,
The wondrous grace of God,
Of Christ as Lord and Saviour,
Of the redeeming blood;
The glory of the kingdom,
By Peter preached that day –
Three thousand souls converted
Were brought beneath its sway!

Yet still a greater glory
In heav'nly light doth shine,
Of Christ and the assembly –
Great mystery divine!
Yes, in still richer lustre,
The gospel preached by Paul,
Giv'n to him out of heaven –
Truth of the heav'nly call!

Christ in His glorious headship,
The church, His body here –
The purpose of the ages,
Its light doth now appear.
This heav'nly light all glorious –
In radiance soon will shine –
Throughout the wide creation
Shed forth its rays benign!

So, blessèd God, we thank Thee,
Thou kingdom grace dost give –
Light, too, of the assembly,
In which our souls would live.
Thy ways of wondrous blessing,
Thy purposes of love,
The kingdom and th'assembly
Thy grace and glory prove!

The Unction
1 John 2: 20-27

How good to know the unction –
O wondrous mystery!
That God gives to His children
The pow'r to hear, and see
Things that are of the Spirit,
The wondrous things above,
Of Christ, and of the Father,
The things of light and love!

All that is false detecting –
The unction faithfully,
As given from the Holy,
Protects the family.
This wonderful provision
Has been divinely giv'n,
To keep us from the evil,
Hold us in touch with heav'n.

O blessèd God, we thank Thee
For all Thy wondrous care,
In love to keep Thy children
From all the evil here.
We bless Thee for the teaching
The unction doth provide,
Thy love our hearts rejoicing,
As we in Thee abide.

What peace is giv'n Thy children,
As being taught of God,
And, by Thy grace, here proving
The value of the blood.
The Father, Son, and Spirit,
Engaged our souls to bless –
Thus, by the unction's power,
Great joy our hearts possess!

He is Worthy

Lord Jesus, glorious Saviour,
We bring our praise to Thee,
We see Thee crowned with glory,
Supreme in majesty!
The light of all God's glory
Shines in Thy blessèd face,
And in that radiant shining
We read God's wondrous grace.

Thyself, as Prince and Saviour,
Exalted now we see,
Object of countless myriads
Who find their joy in Thee.
O glorious Man, triumphant,
The Firstborn from the dead,
Seated on high in glory,
Thou art the church's Head!

We bless Thee, peerless Saviour,
Our hearts would Thee adore,
Yes, all Thy people love Thee –
Would love Thee more and more!
Worthy of ev'ry honour
Which now adorns Thy brow –
Hearts freshly moved, we worship,
With deepest rev'rence bow!

The Heavenly Calling

O gracious Saviour, keep us
In spirit, body, soul,
Keep us in moral accord
Now with the heav'nly goal –
How great our heav'nly calling,
And wondrous destiny –
Thy bride, to share Thy glory,
Seated on high with Thee!

The blessèd Spirit with us,
Sent down to us by Thee,
Now tells us of Thy glory,
And of our part with Thee.
True to His blessèd mission,
As Comforter and Guide,
Grace – power for the journey –
By Him is now supplied!

How great Thy love, Lord Jesus –
Thyself, Thy life, didst give
And, through Thy death securing
Thy church, with Thee to live
In heav'nly life and glory,
To have her near Thy side,
As Thy companion ever –
Thy heart thus satisfied!

Nearing Home – 80th birthday!

Another year we enter –
Solemn, yet blessèd thought!
Solemn – our days here numbered!
Blessèd – we're nearer brought
To our bright home in glory,
To have our part, and place
With Christ our glorious Saviour,
To see Him face to face!

Thus we are drawn t'wards heaven,
From this poor world away,
The pressure here resulting
In glory in that day.
We do not wish to linger,
Or tarry here below –
The thought of heav'n's tomorrow
Doth set our hearts aglow!

So, as the years are passing,
We'd keep in mind the Prize,
The heav'nly vision ever
Bright'ning before our eyes.
Vain things of earth forgetting,
Eyes fixed upon the goal –
The prospect sanctifying
Our spirit, body, soul!

One of our last Letters from C.D.

Note: This letter was written only a few months before C.D. was taken by the Lord. It is included here as a testimony to the gracious and brotherly spirit that ever characterized him. G.A.R.

Beloved Gordon and Betty,

At last! To show how glad I am to hear from you I reply by return!

How good that you, with myself, can speak of the goodness of God, which endures continually!.

We have had to get rid of a lot of rubbish ( I don't mean brethren ) which had been brought in, and the blessing of fresh revival in our hearts is very apparent, thank God.

We mourn over those who have been turned aside … We can appreciate the feelings of the heart of God – "How shall I give thee up?"

In a letter I had yesterday from —— he speaks of a great sorrow in Spain – an accident, five brothers killed! We have since heard that only three sisters are now left in this meeting.

We keep pretty well through the mercy of God. Yes, we heard that Betty has not been well, but much relieved to hear that you are better, dear sister!

We expect to go away at the end of the month to the Pacific Coast. Invitations have been very alluring, and the love of the brethren most affecting.

I am sending a few recent compositions, knowing of your interest – one written this morning before your letter came.

We unite in fervent love to you both, and to all the dear brethren.

Affectionately, Your brother in Christ,

Charles Deayton.

Hallelujah

Note: May be sung to the tune Man of Sorrows by repeating the last line, "Hallelujah!" C.D.

Let us praise the Saviour's name,
Let us spread abroad His fame,
To save sinners Jesus came – Hallelujah!

Coming down from heights above,
O the wonder of His love
To all who His grace now prove – Hallelujah!

Wondrous story – Jesus died,
Bore our sins, was crucified,
Rose again, now glorified – Hallelujah!

Now on high in glory bright,
Object He of God's delight,
Now to faith a wondrous sight – Hallelujah!

Turn, O turn to Him today,
And accept His rightful sway,
Then your lips will truly say – Hallelujah!

Soon He'll come o'er all to reign,
Through creation's wide domain
Then will sound the glad refrain – Hallelujah!

Our God
Nehemiah 13: 2 – Deuteronomy 23: 5
"Our God turned the curse into blessing."

In evil hire Balaam, that day,
Engaged himself to speak
A curse upon God's people here,
And their undoing seek.

But God put forth His holy rights,
And intervened that day,
The lips of Balaam did possess,
And told him what to say.

Those who God's holy right defy
Are made to feel His pow'r –
Balaam's compelled Israel to bless
In that amazing hour!

Though Balaam's heart is still unchanged –
He was a wicked man –
Yet He's compelled God's words to speak
According to His plan;

In heav'n-directed wondrous words,
Of choicest thoughts divine,
The curse is now to blessing turned –
Israel – God said – is Mine!

And, later on, we read of one
Whose breath He would employ,
To curse God's people, and set out
Those people to destroy.

See Saul, of Tarsus, riding forth
By Satan's pow'r impelled,
Yet see – O miracle divine –
The adversary felled!

A light from heav'n – O glorious light!
A Voice from heav'n is heard –
Saul, Saul, why persecutest Me? –
What means this wondrous word?

'Tis Jesus, yes, the Nazarene,
Enthroned in heav'n above,
Protecting, in His holy rights,
The objects of His love.

Letters of death, carried that day,
Are overtaken now,
As Saul to a far greater pow'r,
By grace, is made to bow.

The curse is to a blessing changed –
How great the blessing giv'n,
Saul is converted and becomes
Th'apostle Paul, of heav'n!

Letters of life he's giv'n to write,
Of choicest thoughts divine,
Which were dictated from above,
Said Christ – th'assembly's Mine!
